Alpena Childcare and Development Center

Latchkey Programs

The Latchkey programs are one of the Alpena Childcare and Development Center's major accomplishments!  In 1996 our community hosted a A Child Watch Visitation@ the purpose of which was to look at the problems facing school age children who needed before and after school care.  Most children in our community were staying home and parents were not able to work because of the few opportunities for care of school age children.  We, in collaboration with the Alpena Public Schools, opened programs in 3 Alpena Public Schools to provide childcare before and after school. The community used the programs and the need for them continues to be great.  The public schools have since received a 3-year grant to continue the programs at no cost to families.  This was our goal and is the best possible outcome from the initial collaboration.

Alpena Childcare and Development Center provides before and after school age programs here at the center.  We have a Besser bus route and some parents choose to use Dial-a-ride for their children from other elementary schools.
